Responsible for the day-to-day operation of a tug/vessel, assisting the Master in managing tug movements, safety procedures, and compliance with NMDC regulations, policies, and the Safety Management System (SMS). Determine course and towing speed using local conditions and navigation tools, direct operational tasks, ensure crew awareness of risk assessments, motivate safety observations, and maintain statutory documentation including logbooks and oil record books.

Key Responsibilities

•Assist the Master in the day-to-day operation of the tug/vessel and manage tug movements and related activities in accordance with NMDC regulations, policies, and operating procedures.
•Ensure familiarity with fleet regulations and SMS documents, including implementing onboard procedures and conducting periodic SMS reviews with deficiencies reported to the Marine Superintendent.
•Determine course and towing speed based on local winds, weather, tides, and current; steer the tug to push/pull vessels to destination and berth/unberth while avoiding hazards to shipping.
•Direct operational tasks such as placement of suction hose/siphon for pumping water from holds and signaling workers to repair leaks.
•Ensure crew awareness of applicable risk assessments, safeguard and motivate crew on safety observations, properly induct crew for vessel familiarization and operational training, and ensure proper completion of statutory documentation.

Key Requirements

•A valid Master Mariner 3000 GT and Below of Chief Mate Class 1 II/2 STCW, unlimited, recognized by State, national and international (White listed).
•Familiarity with fleet regulations and the Safety Management System (SMS) documents.
•Ability to determine course and towing speed using knowledge of local winds, weather, tides, and current.
•Ability to operate and navigate the tug while avoiding hazards to shipping using navigation devices such as radar, sonic depth finder, compass, and sextant.
•Ability to ensure statutory documentation is properly completed, including official log books, departmental logbooks, oil record books, and other required records.
