Job Summary

Support propellant and non-metal materials characterization for multiple defense programs within the Materials Engineering Department. Work hands-on in a Tucson on-site laboratory to assess supplier energetic data, troubleshoot materials issues at suppliers (with occasional travel), and perform chemical analysis and testing using advanced instrumentation. Develop methods and test plans, lead characterization/design efforts, and document findings through clear scientific reporting and collaboration with engineers and subject matter experts.

Key Responsibilities

•Assess energetic supplier data, troubleshoot supplier issues, and support root-cause corrective actions (including occasional supplier travel).
•Assess materials for conformance to specifications and conduct hands-on testing in the Tucson facility.
•Perform standard chemical analysis laboratory testing using instrumentation such as FTIR, SEM-EDS, GC-MS, LC, NMR, TGA, DSC, and DMA.
•Develop methods and test plans and lead characterization and design projects.
•Follow written protocols, use databases, collaborate with engineers/SMEs/suppliers, and document and communicate results and project status updates.

Key Requirements

•Typically requires a university degree with 8+ years of relevant experience, or an advanced degree with 5+ years of experience.
•Experience using propellant mixers and standard laboratory equipment (e.g., ovens, thermometers, calipers, microscope).
•Experience with instrumental analysis techniques including FTIR, UV-Vis, DSC, DMA, TMA, TGA, rheology, GCMS, NMR, ICP-OES, HPLC, GPC, SEM, and EDS.
•Ability to assess materials for conformance to specifications using laboratory testing and instrumentation.
•Experience developing methods and test plans, supporting multi-disciplinary scientific projects, and documenting results.
