Job Summary

Provide strata control services within the assigned business area by conducting pit slope audits, gathering and interpreting geotechnical data, and applying rock engineering criteria. Investigate pit instability issues, identify defects, and produce reports and statistical summaries to improve safety and productivity. Coach and oversee Rock Engineering Observers, collaborate with technical services and mining personnel, and continuously improve strata control processes while meeting safety and standardization requirements.

Key Responsibilities

•Deliver strata control services and support to technical services and mining personnel in line with standards, practices, and procedures.
•Conduct pit slope audits and gather/interpret geotechnical data to determine geological and mining practices/conditions.
•Identify defects, investigate pit instability problems, and issue recommendations to improve safety and productivity.
•Install, maintain, and manage slope stability monitoring devices and perform/interpret kinematic analyses (e.g., in Dips).
•Oversee and review Rock Engineering Observers’ tasks, coach and provide on-the-job training, and improve strata control processes.

Key Requirements

•Grade 12 or equivalent NQF 4 qualification with Maths and Science passed on a higher grade.
•Mining relevant tertiary qualification (e.g., Diploma or Degree) or South African Minerals Council’s Strata Control Certificate.
•Blasting certificate advantageous.
•0–2 years rock engineering experience in a surface or underground mining environment (with a degree).
•5–10 years rock engineering experience in a surface or underground mining environment (with South African Minerals Council’s Strata Control Certificate).
