Job Summary

Lead and grow AECOM’s Tunnelling & Underground Structures team (15-20 engineers) in the UK, driving strategy, delivery, and client engagement. This leadership role combines people management with technical oversight across rock and soft ground tunnels, shafts, and deep excavations, while shaping bid strategy, safety culture, quality control, and collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

•Safety culture and performance: ensure safety is the primary concern of all team members, carry out risk assessments, implement safety controls, and report safety observations for improvement.
•Stakeholder relationships: lead work winning and business development activities, develop client relationships, and review proposals aligned with resourcing.
•Quality control: ensure data accuracy and forecasting for safety, financial performance, and work pipeline; report indicators to management.
•Leadership: define and influence workplace culture, improve communication and collaboration, raise morale and productivity.
•Collaboration: foster an inclusive environment, set team goals, and maintain relationships with clients and industry bodies to support tendering and project delivery.

Key Requirements

•Degree educated or equivalent in Civil or Geotechnical Engineering, coupled with post graduate experience in a Leadership role with a Tunnelling team.
•Chartered Engineer (EI, ICE, IStructE or equivalent recognized professional institution)
•Excellent communication (written and spoken) and interpersonal skills
•Previous experience in rock and soft ground and encompassing tunnels, shafts and deep excavations for transportation, energy and utility related schemes.
•Experience working on large, multi-disciplinary projects and an ability to engage with and understand the requirements of different disciplines and interfaces; capable of roles such as Technical Lead, Design Manager or Project Manager as well as leading bids.
