Job Summary

Lead a UK-based Tunnelling & Underground Structures team (15-20 engineers) in strategy, design delivery, mentoring, and client engagement. Balance technical leadership with bid management, safety culture, quality control, and cross-disciplinary collaboration to drive multi-year tunnelling projects in the UK and abroad.

Key Responsibilities

•Safety culture and performance: ensure safety is the primary concern of all team members, carry out risk assessments, implement safety controls, and report safety observations for learning.
•Stakeholder relationships: lead work winning and business development activities, maintain relationships with public sector and contractor clients, and review commercial proposals.
•Quality control: ensure data accuracy and forecasting for the Regional Lead, including safety, financial performance, and work pipeline indicators.
•Leadership: define workplace culture, set communication standards, raise morale, and improve productivity and collaboration.
•Collaboration: foster an inclusive environment, set clear team goals, and maintain client/industry relationships to support tendering and project delivery.

Key Requirements

•Degree educated or equivalent in Civil or Geotechnical Engineering, coupled with post graduate experience in a Leadership role with a Tunnelling team.
•Chartered Engineer (EI, ICE, IStructE or equivalent recognized professional institution)
•Excellent communication (written and spoken) and interpersonal skills
•Previous experience in rock and soft ground and encompassing tunnels, shafts and deep excavations for transportation, energy and utility related schemes.
•Experience working on large, multi-disciplinary projects and an ability to engage with and understand the requirements of different disciplines and interfaces; able to undertake roles such as Technical Lead, Design Manager or Project Manager and lead bids.
