Key Responsibilities

  • •Collaborate with product to shape requirements, break work into shippable iterations, and plan/complete deliverables with other engineers.
  • •Design and implement backend features across the GitLab monolith, including GraphQL and REST APIs and real-time subscriptions with a focus on performance and reliability.
  • •Improve PostgreSQL performance at scale by optimizing queries/writes, denormalizing and partitioning tables, and moving workloads to Elasticsearch or ClickHouse as appropriate.
  • •Create proofs of concept for complex work, ensure quality with extensive testing, and roll out safely behind feature flags.
  • •Mentor engineers and contributors through code reviews and pairing, and participate in on-call rotations to troubleshoot production issues and improve observability.

Key Requirements

  • •Strong product mindset focused on user needs and collaborating with product managers to negotiate trade-offs.
  • •Proficiency with Ruby and Ruby on Rails, with backend experience maintaining features in a large, mature codebase.
  • •Strong PostgreSQL skills, including query/write optimization, indexing, denormalization, and partitioning for performance at scale.
  • •Experience designing and evolving GraphQL and/or REST APIs with scalability, backward compatibility, and clear frontend contracts.
  • •Experience improving large automated test suites and strong written/verbal communication for an asynchronous, distributed environment.
