Key Responsibilities

  • •Provide materials selection, characterization, qualification, and manufacturing process support for metallic and metal-joined hardware on Starlink and ground infrastructure assemblies.
  • •Develop alloy and joint mechanical/physical property data, allowables, and process recommendations for the design community.
  • •Conduct root cause investigations and failure analysis using fractography, metallography, SEM-EDS, optical microscopy, and other characterization testing.
  • •Develop, qualify, troubleshoot, and optimize metal joining processes (welding, brazing, soldering, sintering) and their process variables for production performance.
  • •Advise on material alloy selection and specifications, and collaborate with suppliers to qualify custom metallic components and resolve issues.

Key Requirements

  • •Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Welding Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • •5+ years of experience with aluminum alloys for structural/non-structural applications and metal alloys used in electronic applications, plus metal-joining processes (welding, brazing, soldering, sintering).
  • •Experience with characterization techniques and equipment such as SEM-EDS, optical microscopy, hardness testing, mechanical property testing, and spectroscopy for composition/phase.
  • •Strong welding fundamentals, including first-principles understanding of welding processes, weld strength testing methodologies, and relevant standards.
  • •Hands-on metal-joining experience in a high-production manufacturing environment, including failure analysis and technical review of materials and processes.
