Job Summary

Own sensor calibration for Apollo’s multi-modal perception suite, ensuring intrinsic, extrinsic, and temporal calibration produces mathematically consistent autonomy inputs. Design precision fixtures and targets for repeatable factory calibration, develop calibration algorithms and sensor models, and build scalable end-of-line automation. Collaborate to validate sub-microsecond synchronization using PTP/PPS and implement data tracking to monitor fleet-wide calibration health and drift in the field.
Location: Austin
Workplace: Onsite
Employment Type: Full time
Job Function: Hardware, Embedded & Systems Engineering
Seniority: Mid level

Key Responsibilities

  • •Define and implement intrinsic sensor models for optical and inertial sensors (e.g., pinhole/fisheye/Brown-Conrady/Kannala-Brandt and IMU bias/scale/random walk).
  • •Develop highly accurate extrinsic calibration for sensor-to-sensor and sensor-to-kinematic base spatial transformations.
  • •Validate temporal synchronization with electrical and embedded teams to achieve sub-microsecond sync across perception streams using PTP, PPS, and hardware triggering.
  • •Design precision calibration fixtures and targets (e.g., CharuCo boards and custom 3D geometries) and validate mounting rigidity and drift from thermal/mechanical effects.
  • •Build scalable calibration processes including end-of-line automation, online self-diagnostic routines for in-field drift adjustment, and fleet-wide data tracking for calibration health.

Key Requirements

  • •5+ years of experience in perception hardware, computer vision, or robotics focused on sensor calibration and validation.
  • •Deep knowledge of 3D geometry, linear algebra, coordinate frame transformations (quaternions, rotation matrices, SE(3)), and non-linear optimization (least-squares, bundle adjustment).
  • •Strong programming skills in Python and C++ with experience using OpenCV and PCL plus optimization frameworks such as Ceres Solver and g2o.
  • •Hands-on experience with optical components, LiDAR mechanisms, and MEMS IMUs, including understanding of optical distortion, rolling shutter artifacts, and IMU drift.
  • •MS or PhD in Robotics, Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
