Job Summary

Work in Sonoco’s R&D centre in Wantage as part of the Packaging Sciences Department, supporting assessment of packaging components and analysis of materials and packed products. You’ll be trained to perform pack testing, use analytical chemistry techniques, and support customer and factory activities through sample handling, measurement, interpretation, and formal reporting. Alongside workplace learning, complete a part-time distance learning Chemical Science BSc (Hons) at Manchester Metropolitan University.

Key Responsibilities

•Support packaging and materials assessment and problem-solving activities within the Packaging Sciences Department and wider R&D group.
•Perform pack testing by preparing model products, packing cans to industry standards, and evaluating container/coating/product performance.
•Use analytical chemistry techniques to analyze samples (including preparation/dilution and instrument-based testing) to support business, customer, and project work.
•Support customer and factory activities through sample labelling/storage, recording information, sample mounting/cross-section work, measurement, and leak/product testing.
•Interpret technical data and produce formal reports with clear conclusions and recommendations for further actions where appropriate.

Key Requirements

•Minimum 104 UCAS points at A-level (grades BCC), with one being chemistry or an equivalent scientific discipline.
•Competent computing skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office.
•Good written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present scientific data.
•Ability to balance workload with on-the-job training and take responsibility for personal development.
•Commitment to safe-working requirements and ability to work in a team.
