Job Summary

Own how OpenAI evaluates, governs, and delivers environmental and community performance across its global data center portfolio. Set environmental standards, lead early environmental risk screening, oversee Phase I/II ESA and other site investigations, and ensure projects meet regulatory and long-term stewardship commitments. Partner with site selection, power, engineering, and community teams to shape site advancement, permitting strategies, construction compliance, and long-term community-aligned outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

•Design and deliver community-aligned environmental programs that improve permitting outcomes and strengthen local trust.
•Lead environmental diligence and risk assessment across prospective sites, including wetlands, floodplains, endangered species, cultural resources, and construction impacts.
•Manage site-level environmental investigations and liability reviews, including Phase I/Phase II ESAs and archaeological/cultural-resource reviews.
•Establish and enforce OpenAI environmental and community standards across land developers, utilities, EPCs, and joint-venture partners, including auditing and mitigation plans.
•Lead environmental and permitting strategies across federal, state, and local agencies and oversee compliance during construction and early operations.

Pay and Benefits

Salary: USD 226,000 - 285,000 annually

Key Requirements

•8+ years in environmental permitting, infrastructure development, energy, or large-scale project delivery with hands-on experience navigating complex federal and state regulatory frameworks.
•Experience managing environmental consultants, developers, and regulators on multi-stakeholder, politically visible projects while setting standards and holding partners accountable.
•Ability to translate environmental risk into financial, schedule, and reputational risk and design practical, cost-effective mitigation strategies.
•Comfort operating in ambiguous, fast-moving environments while balancing long-term stewardship with aggressive infrastructure timelines.
•Demonstrated understanding of environmental and community considerations across the lifecycle from site selection through permitting, construction, early operations, and long-term stewardship.
