Key Responsibilities

  • •Perform electric arc and oxy-acetylene welding per Detroit Edison Specifications 308 on alloy steel piping, tubing, fittings, valves, boilers, turbines, pumps, and related high-pressure/high-temperature parts.
  • •Verify proper preheating of alloy steel pieces using temperature indicating crayon or potentiometer/thermocouples, and weld to required specifications.
  • •Set up, regulate, and operate welding and flame-cutting/heating equipment for metal work.
  • •Read and understand welding symbols and determine whether proper welds are possible on parts assembled by pipefitters or mechanics.
  • •Direct work of an assigned Welder Chipper and stamp identifying numbers on finished work for inspection traceability.

Key Requirements

  • •High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • •Qualified journeyman Welder A with successful completion of a company recognized apprenticeship program, or 8 years of verified hands-on experience as a Welder A.
  • •Attain a “RECOMMENDED” evaluation on the Construction and Skilled Trades test (CAST) (except if incumbent and/or changing location).
  • •Become Aluminum GTAW qualified (aluminum pipe, 5G position welding qualification) within 90 days of transfer.
  • •Valid driver’s license, pass required medical card/physical examination, and be physically able to work at heights and in confined spaces while working assigned shifts.
