Key Responsibilities

  • •Examine equipment and discuss the nature and extent of damage or malfunction with the equipment supervisor.
  • •Plan repair procedures and possible solutions including part redesign, substitution, or rearrangement of parts/subassemblies.
  • •Raise equipment to access mechanical units, remove components (e.g., engines, transmissions, drums, seals), and repair or replace worn parts.
  • •Rebuild parts such as crankshafts, cylinder blocks, and valves; rewire ignition, lights, and instrument panel; replace/adjust headlights and install/repair accessories.
  • •Drain fluids/oil with proper containment/disposal procedures and set up tests of units/components under operational conditions.

Key Requirements

  • •Must have one year certificate from a college/technical school, or three to six months related experience/training, or an equivalent combination.
  • •Must have own tools.
  • •Must be able to read and interpret safety rules, operating/maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; write routine reports and correspond.
  • •Must have knowledge of hydraulic and electrical systems on heavy equipment.
  • •If not currently a member of IUOE Local Numbers 18 and 18C (AFL-CIO), must join within 60 days of employment.
