Job Summary

Lead and mentor a team of lighting artists to deliver the cinematic look for an upcoming animated feature. You’ll supervise lighting for shots and sequences, collaborate with VFX, cinematography, and art leadership to define style and quality, troubleshoot lighting challenges, and help establish tools and workflows. Based in Vancouver with a hybrid schedule, you’ll ensure lit assets are technically robust for compositing and final delivery.

Key Responsibilities

•Lead and mentor a team of lighting artists, casting work appropriately and providing constructive feedback in dailies and reviews.
•Collaborate with VFX leadership, head of cinematography, production design, and art directors to establish lighting style, color palette, and quality bar.
•Supervise the lighting of shots and sequences to support story, performance, and visual continuity, ensuring assets are ready for compositing and final delivery.
•Create or refine key lighting shots and setups, especially complex, hero, or reference-setting work to establish the team’s quality and technical approach.
•Troubleshoot lighting technical and artistic challenges, help define lighting tools/rigs/templates/workflows, and coordinate with surfacing, FX/CFX, matte painting, and compositing teams.

Pay and Benefits

Salary: CAD 180,000 - 230,000 annually

Key Requirements

•Significant experience as a Lighting Artist in feature animation, VFX, or high-end series, including time in a Lead or Supervisory role.
•Strong reel demonstrating high-quality lighting and rendering with deep understanding of color, mood, and cinematic storytelling.
•Proficiency with industry-standard lighting and rendering tools such as Maya, Katana, Houdini, and renderers like Arnold or RenderMan.
•Strong understanding of how lighting interacts with Modeling, Surfacing, FX, CFX, Matte Painting, Compositing, and Rendering within a production pipeline.
•Excellent communication and leadership skills, with the ability to give clear, constructive feedback and collaborate across departments.
