  • •Own the technical direction and delivery of the retrieval stack end to end, including search, embedding generation/backfill, chunking/ranking, and RAG comprehensiveness across the work graph.
  • •Build and operate evaluation infrastructure to make retrieval quality measurable with recall/precision benchmarks, offline and online evals, and comparative testing.
  • •Drive cost, performance, and quality tradeoffs by balancing semantic vs lexical approaches and hitting latency targets without sacrificing recall.
  • •Set and enforce platform standards for how other teams integrate with retrieval, including embedding ownership, rollout guidance, and metrics.
  • •Hire, grow, and retain senior engineers in NYC and lead effectively across time zones with disciplined async communication.

Key Requirements

  • •8+ years of software engineering experience with 3+ years managing engineers on infrastructure or ML systems teams.
  • •Shipped and operated production search, retrieval, or ML-serving systems at meaningful scale, and can discuss index architecture, embedding models, latency budgets, and incidents.
  • •Deep working knowledge of modern retrieval: inverted indexes/BM25, vector search and embedding models, hybrid retrieval, chunking, and re-ranking, including strong views on tradeoffs.
  • •Built or heavily used ML/AI evaluation systems, including golden datasets, recall/precision metrics, LLM-as-judge, and online experimentation.
  • •Experience reviewing technical designs (e.g., embedding backfill or OpenSearch mapping changes) and leading distributed teams with clear written communication; LLM/agent/RAG production experience is strongly preferred.
