Job Summary

Conduct laboratory and field quality tests on aggregate and hot mix asphalt to verify composition, consistency, and compliance with required specifications. Monitor pavement conditions during installation, including temperature, thickness, and density, and assist with HMA installation recommendations. Use and calibrate a density meter, communicate test results with other technicians and paving personnel, and input data into computers using basic software tools.

Key Responsibilities

•Test aggregate and/or asphalt mix to determine composition and consistency with required specifications.
•Monitor temperature, thickness, density, and overall pavement condition during installation.
•Test materials for requirements such as weight, gravity, temperature, thickness, and gradation of mix components.
•Input test result data into computers in laboratories and remote locations.
•Calibrate and use a density meter, communicate test results ethically, and assist paving personnel in adjusting processes to meet specifications.

Key Requirements

•High School diploma or equivalent skill level.
•Ability to perform standardized laboratory tests in accordance with ASTM and AASHTO standards.
•Knowledge and understanding of basic operating procedures and mechanics of an asphalt plant.
•Knowledge of applicable safety, environmental, and transportation regulations (federal, state, and local).
•Ability to obtain Level 2 and/or Level 3 ODOT testing certifications within a reasonable amount of time.
