Key Responsibilities

  • •Lead legal and compliance activities for new entity setup, licensing applications, regulatory approvals, and Japan business expansion initiatives.
  • •Act as primary legal and compliance advisor for payments, merchant acquiring, fintech, and financial services matters to ensure local regulatory adherence.
  • •Develop, implement, and maintain compliance frameworks, policies, procedures, governance structures, and internal controls for Japan operations.
  • •Serve as key liaison with Japanese regulators, including the Financial Services Agency (FSA), managing submissions, inquiries, examinations, and audits.
  • •Lead compliance risk assessments and oversee compliance programs covering AML/CFT, sanctions, data privacy, consumer protection, and third-party risk management.
  • •Draft, review, negotiate, and manage commercial, customer, vendor, partnership, and corporate agreements.
  • •Partner with business, finance, HR, operations, and technology teams to manage legal and regulatory risks while supporting initiatives.
  • •Manage external legal counsel and provide compliance training to foster ethics, governance, and regulatory compliance across the organization.

Key Requirements

  • •8–12 years of legal and/or compliance experience in payments, fintech, merchant acquiring, banking, or financial services.
  • •Strong knowledge of Japanese regulatory frameworks, including payments regulations, AML/CFT, data privacy, consumer protection, and corporate governance.
  • •Hands-on experience launching or expanding regulated financial services or fintech operations in Japan, including work with the FSA and local regulators.
  • •Ability to establish and manage legal, compliance, risk management, and governance frameworks in a regulated environment.
  • •Business-fluent Japanese and English communication skills to manage regulators, external counsel, and senior stakeholders.
  • •Bachelor’s degree in Law, Business, Finance, Compliance, or related discipline (legal qualification preferred).
