Job Summary

Design, build, and own core authorization and access control components for Canva’s User Platform. You’ll work on the centralized, SpiceDB-backed authorization platform, partner with Security, API Platform, Admin Experience, and product engineering, and help teams adopt patterns, tooling, and integrations at Canva’s scale. Lead sound technical trade-offs for high-availability infrastructure, shape IAM and identity models (including agentic AI workflows), and mentor engineers on system design and IAM best practices.

Key Responsibilities

•Design, build, and own authorization and access control systems, including Canva’s centralized SpiceDB-backed authorization platform.
•Enable product teams to adopt authorization capabilities through patterns, tooling, and integrations.
•Make technical trade-offs for critical, high-availability infrastructure serving hundreds of millions of users.
•Partner across Security, API Platform, Admin Experience, and product engineering to align requirements and drive adoption.
•Mentor and uplift engineers on system design and IAM best practice, shaping IAM models and authorization for agentic AI workflows.

Key Requirements

•Direct experience designing and operating Identity & Access Management and authorization/access control systems at scale in production (RBAC/ReBAC/ABAC or Zanzibar-style such as SpiceDB).
•Strong backend engineering experience building and running high-performance, high-availability distributed services (Java a plus).
•Strong system design skills to turn ambiguous, cross-cutting problems into well-sequenced work.
•Track record driving adoption of platform capabilities across engineering teams with clear technical communication and stakeholder alignment.
•Strong written and verbal communication and collaborative cross-team mindset.
