Build payments infrastructure for local government, shaping a still-emerging domain that powers the financial backbone of an AI operating system. Design auditable ledger architecture, create precise fee calculation, and make partial payments, deposits, and refunds first-class. Own migrations from existing payment workflows and set the technical standard for how others build. Work with finance teams, municipal staff, and engineers in a hybrid environment (NYC 3+ days/week).

Key Responsibilities

•Design the financial architecture underlying every dollar municipalities collect, refund, or hold on behalf of others.
•Build an auditable, mathematically consistent ledger system trusted by finance teams.
•Implement precise fee calculation and support partial payments, deposits, and refunds as first-class platform capabilities.
•Own migrations of payments from existing systems to the new target domain with real customers and real money.
•Partner with finance teams, municipal staff, and engineers to set the technical standard other engineers will build against.

Pay and Benefits

Salary: USD 160,000 - 260,000 annually

•Experience designing financial or transactional systems where correctness isn’t optional (payments, billing, ledgers, or similar).
•Real opinions on payments system architecture and comfort bringing your own approach instead of only implementing specs.
•Ability to work at the domain-design level in ambiguous areas, shaping abstractions rather than only building features.
•Experience with idempotency, webhooks, and payment processor integrations such as Stripe or Finix.
•Think through invariants and edge cases (duplicate webhooks, mid-invoice fee schedule changes, partial refund reversals).
