Key Responsibilities

  • •Integrate Apache Iceberg open table formats into SAP’s Data & Analytics portfolio, ensuring high-performance interoperability with SAP data products.
  • •Define and own the architectural roadmap aligning Data Lakehouse paradigms with SAP’s enterprise data analytics strategy for BI, scalable ML, and GenAI workloads.
  • •Design Iceberg-backed Lakehouse transition and federation strategies to extend capabilities of SAP’s core data engines for customers.
  • •Lead evaluation and implementation of interoperable metadata catalog architectures using Iceberg REST catalog and Apache Polaris to enable multi-engine compatibility and reduce vendor lock-in.
  • •Serve as SME and advisor to engineering, product, and executives by authoring technical standards, architectural decision records (ADRs), and proof-of-concept implementations.

Key Requirements

  • •10+ years in data engineering, data architecture, or software engineering, including 3+ years in a strategic, enterprise-wide architectural role.
  • •Deep architectural expertise with SAP HANA, SAP Business Data Cloud (SAP Datasphere), and SAP Analytics Cloud.
  • •Extensive Data Lakehouse knowledge and experience with compute engines such as Spark, Trino, and Flink; expertise with Databricks and Snowflake is a plus.
  • •Hands-on understanding of Apache Iceberg internals (e.g., manifest files, snapshot isolation) and optimization (e.g., compaction/Z-ordering).
  • •Strong knowledge of metadata catalog ecosystems, including Iceberg REST catalog APIs and standards such as Apache Polaris or Project Nessie.
