Own the technical direction and execution of foundation-model workstreams that integrate wearable sensor, language, biomarkers, clinical, and self-reported data. Identify high-impact research bets in self-supervised/representation learning and drive them from thesis to production capability. Partner across research, product, and engineering to translate breakthroughs into product and business outcomes, while raising team evaluation and design-review standards.

Key Responsibilities

•Set architectural direction for large-scale models across wearable sensor data, text, biomarkers, and behavioral signals, owning high-stakes design decisions.
•Choose and drive self-supervised/representation-learning research bets from thesis to validated, production-capable results.
•Contribute to WHOOP’s AI strategy and standards by shaping platform, compute, and infrastructure choices.
•Partner across research, product, and engineering to connect technical breakthroughs to product and business outcomes.
•Raise the team’s technical bar by growing staff, strengthening design-review and evaluation norms, and representing WHOOP externally.

Pay and Benefits

Salary: USD 270,000 - 300,000 annually

Key Requirements

•Advanced degree (Master’s or Ph.D.) or equivalent depth with extensive large-scale ML and AI research experience.
•Own technical direction for a significant area and make architectural decisions with lasting impact beyond a single project.
•Take ambiguous, high-risk research directions through production impact and discontinue those that won’t succeed.
•Deep expertise in modern deep learning including transformers and state space models, multimodal training, self-supervised/representation learning, and RL-based post-training (PPO/DPO/GRPO).
•Experience with large-scale distributed training (data, model, and context parallelism) and acting as a technical authority teams defer to.
