Work on an ML systems engineering co-op project to accelerate an LLM or VLM on the Ryzen AI NPU. You’ll profile where time and memory go, then propose optimizations, including training/tuning AIE kernels with IRON for key LLM operators (e.g., GEMM, attention, normalization, activations). You’ll present findings to the wider engineering organization and build knowledge on transformer-to-accelerator mappings and AI compiler/runtime structures.

Employment Type: Internship
Job Function: Research & Scientific (R&D)
Seniority: Intern level

Key Responsibilities

  • •Own a project to make an LLM or VLM run faster on the Ryzen AI NPU.
  • •Study and analyze where time and memory are spent, then propose changes to improve performance.
  • •Learn to write and tune AIE kernels with IRON to optimize dominant LLM operators (GEMM, attention, normalization, activation functions).
  • •Present findings to the wider engineering organization at the end of the term and document what you learned.
  • •Work with a mentor who reviews your progress weekly and apply production AI compiler/runtime concepts.

Pay and Benefits

Salary: USD 91,520 - 137,280 annually

Key Requirements

  • •Be completing a PhD in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Electrical Engineering.
  • •Strong understanding of LLM and VLM architectures (attention, KV cache, prefill vs. decode, vision encoder fusion).
  • •Experience with compilers (graph lowering, operator fusion, scheduling, tiling, memory planning); MLIR experience is a plus.
  • •Strong in Python and C++, and able to profile code to identify compute-bound vs. memory-bound behavior.
  • •Familiarity with AMD AI Engine (AIE) architecture, or experience writing kernels or dataflow designs with IRON, is a plus.
