Job Summary

Lead conceptual design of hypersonic and high-speed atmospheric vehicles from mission requirements through preliminary design. Own vehicle architecture recommendations, develop configuration baselines, run first-order sizing, and close multidisciplinary trades across aerodynamics, propulsion, thermal, structures, and TPS mass budgets. Guide early validation/model needs for MDAO and sizing workflows, apply engineering-fidelity methods (e.g., OpenVSP, DATCOM, surrogate models), and mature CAD/outer mold line concepts.
Location: United States
Workplace: Onsite
Employment Type: Full time
Job Function: Design (Product/UX/UI/Visual)
Seniority: Mid level

Key Responsibilities

  • •Translate hypersonic vehicle mission requirements into configuration baselines and first-order sizing (mass, volume, performance, propulsion match, range, payload, and speed).
  • •Perform trajectory- and mission-coupled concept trades across aerodynamics, propulsion, structures, thermal/TPS mass budgets, manufacturability, and mission effectiveness.
  • •Assess architectural alternatives, identify early technical risks, and present trade studies and recommendations to drive vehicle-level decisions.
  • •Define requirements and validation needs for MDAO and conceptual sizing models, partnering with the MDAO team to keep models decision-relevant.
  • •Develop conceptual-level CAD geometry and outer mold line layouts, using appropriate aerodynamic/configuration methods and escalating when higher-fidelity results should change the concept; mentor junior designers.
