Job Summary

Patent Counsel to build and scale WHOOP’s IP program across hardware, software, data science, and health tech. Partner with R&D to surface inventions, draft strong disclosures for outside prosecution, manage portfolio and trademark operations, develop internal IP policies and workflows, and implement scalable docketing processes. Collaborate cross-functionally with Legal, R&D, Product, and business teams while leveraging AI tools to maintain high-quality outputs.

Key Responsibilities

•Partner with engineers, scientists, product leaders, and R&D stakeholders to identify patentable innovations and develop invention disclosures for outside prosecution counsel.
•Lead portfolio analysis, freedom-to-operate and clearance reviews, and risk assessments with senior legal leadership and outside counsel.
•Provide support to litigation matters with claims analysis.
•Manage the day-to-day operation of the WHOOP trademark portfolio, including filings, renewals, watch notices, and coordinating with outside counsel.
•Develop, document, and roll out internal IP policies, workflows, and trainings to improve how teams identify, protect, and use IP.

Pay and Benefits

Salary: USD 170,000 - 210,000 annually

Key Requirements

•J.D. from an accredited law school with USPTO patent attorney registration and active membership in at least one U.S. state bar.
•6+ years of experience in patent law and intellectual property counseling, preferably including both major law firm and in-house experience.
•Technical background in electrical engineering, signal processing, or optics is preferred.
•Experience translating early-stage concepts into strong patent disclosures and IP recommendations, working directly with technical teams.
•Familiarity with patent landscape analysis, portfolio review, freedom-to-operate/clearance analyses, and coordinating with outside counsel on patent matters.
