Job Summary

Repair and maintain heavy machinery and equipment under the direction of the shop supervisor. Diagnose damage or malfunctions, plan repair procedures, and use hydraulic jacks, hoists, or cranes to access mechanical units. Remove and replace components, rebuild parts, rewire and adjust equipment systems and accessories, and drain fluids. Perform tests under operational conditions and follow safety practices, company policies, and flexible scheduling needs.

Key Responsibilities

•Examine equipment and discuss the nature and extent of damage or malfunction with the equipment supervisor.
•Plan work procedures and possible solutions such as part redesign, substitution, or rearrangement of parts/subassemblies.
•Raise equipment and use hydraulic jack, hoist, or crane to access mechanical units; remove units/pieces such as engines, transmissions, drums, and seals.
•Repair, replace, rebuild, and rewire components (e.g., hydraulic pumps, electric motors, valves, pistons, gears, ignition system, lights, instrument panel) and replace/adjust accessories.
•Set up and conduct tests of complete units and components under operational conditions while following safety requirements and company policies.

Key Requirements

•One year certificate from college or technical school, or three to six months related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination.
•Knowledge of hydraulic and electrical systems on heavy equipment.
•Can cut and weld, and must have own tools.
•Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating/maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; write routine reports and communicate effectively.
•If not currently a member of IUOE Local Numbers 18 and 18C, AFL-CIO, must join within 60 days; willing to travel/work away from home and work nights/weekends as needed.
