Key Responsibilities

  • •Act as embedded counsel to AI and R&D teams, advising on product design, model development, and launch decisions from concept through release.
  • •Advise on health data compliance across the AI lifecycle, including HIPAA/HITECH, BAAs, de-identification, and permitted uses for training and evaluation.
  • •Counsel on AI-specific risks such as training data provenance and licensing, third-party model/API terms, output accuracy, clinical decision support, and FDA software boundaries.
  • •Draft and negotiate R&D agreements including data licenses, model/infrastructure provider terms, research and clinical collaborations, BAAs/DPAs, and evaluation and pilot agreements.
  • •Build legal infrastructure to scale AI development, including intake/review processes, launch checklists, playbooks, guidance, and training for engineering and product teams.

Key Requirements

  • •J.D. and active membership in the California bar (or eligibility to register as in-house counsel in California).
  • •Approximately 5–9 years of legal experience with meaningful in-house time supporting a technology, digital health, or healthcare organization.
  • •Demonstrated product counsel experience embedded with engineering and product teams, advising on features in flight.
  • •Healthcare data fluency including HIPAA, business associate relationships, de-identification standards, and practical experience working with PHI.
  • •Working knowledge of AI/ML legal issues including training data rights, model licensing, output liability, evaluation/monitoring, and emerging AI regulation.
