Drive the transition of Zalando’s fulfillment network from manual packing to scalable packaging automation. Own the technical design, testing, and implementation of packaging solutions across paper shipping bags, corrugated boxes, and automation components. Partner with logistics, warehouse, and procurement teams, manage supplier and integration requirements, and establish future-ready technical blueprints, documentation, and business cases—balancing throughput, sustainability, and an excellent unboxing experience.

Key Responsibilities

•Serve as the technical custodian for outbound and intralogistics packaging, ensuring performance, quality, and sustainability of paper shipping bags and corrugated boxes.
•Support manual packaging and packaging automation initiatives by translating logistics strategy into scalable solutions and evaluating material, process, and machine compatibility.
•Own engineering projects end-to-end from scoping through execution, including designing and running agile pilot programs to validate proof-of-concepts.
•Evaluate material behavior under mechanical stress to ensure seamless runnability in both manual pack and automated processes.
•Partner with suppliers, Logistics Operations, Warehouse Teams, and Procurement to integrate new technology and develop technical documentation, CAPEX calculations, and business cases.

Key Requirements

•Background in structural packaging development with fiber-based materials, plus experience in packaging machinery and automation.
•Experience leading technical projects from ideation through testing, piloting, and operational handover (e.g., hardware or automated packaging components).
•Understanding of the physical interplay between packaging materials and machinery, including runnability in manual and automated processes.
•Ability to future-proof concepts for AI-integrated automated machinery and resolve trade-offs across mechanical constraints, material cost, sustainability, and transit durability.
•A degree (B.Sc., M.Sc., or Dipl.-Ing.) in Packaging Technology/Engineering (Verpackungstechnik), Mechanical Engineering, Automation Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related discipline.
