Job Summary

Diagnose, repair, replace, and overhaul auto, truck, and mobile equipment under intermittent supervision. Perform road tests and road service calls, complete preventive and annual DOT inspections, and maintain diesel engines and related fuel/air systems. Use schematics, manuals, computers, and test equipment to write repair orders and recommend additional work. Train and check mechanic apprentices in progression while ensuring contractors’ or vendors’ work is reviewed.

Key Responsibilities

•Disassemble, assemble, adjust, repair, replace, overhaul, operate, and test automotive, truck, and mobile equipment, including gas/diesel/alternative fuel engines, transmissions, brakes, ignition, fuel, and electrical systems.
•Test, operate, and repair mobile equipment including AC/DC generators, dynamic inverters, hydraulic/belt-driven generators, power converters, and fiber optic systems control.
•Perform periodic and annual DOT inspections on vehicles and heavy equipment; operate and test equipment on company property and public roads; write up and recommend needed repairs.
•Maintain and service diesel engines by checking fuel pumps/injectors/injector racks, diagnosing computer-controlled fuel/air induction systems, replacing engine components, and following up on vendor work.
•Make road service calls and field repairs; drive and operate wrecker units; write repair orders and manage parts/time paperwork; train and direct mechanic apprentices or assigned utility personnel.

Key Requirements

•Must have a high school diploma or GED.
•Complete the company’s Automotive Mechanic Apprentice Program or have four years of full-time documented automotive mechanic experience covering engines, transmissions, suspensions, electrical systems, and brakes (or an Automotive Technology program recognized by Detroit Edison plus 2–3 years of documented automotive experience).
•Able to understand written and oral instructions.
•Meet company driving standards and possess or obtain a Group A Commercial Driver’s License with air brake (or the specified temporary instruction permit).
•Take the Construction and Skilled Trades test (CAST) and attain a “Recommended” score, plus pass a satisfactory physical examination and provide basic hand tools up to 1-1/2".
