Provide high-level technical support to the particle physics group, supporting the construction, testing, and installation of upgraded ATLAS detectors at the Large Hadron Collider (CERN). Assemble and characterize silicon detector prototypes, develop and maintain lab infrastructure for detector testing, and support quality control across testing and readout. Diagnose and resolve technical issues, maintain detailed experimental records, and help manage experiments and laboratories, working fully in-person at the University of Birmingham and related facilities.

Key Responsibilities

•Assist in assembling silicon detector prototypes, including gluing and ultrasonic wirebonding.
•Develop and maintain infrastructure for detector characterisation (e.g., mechanical supports, cooling, cabling) across BILPA clean rooms, Birmingham’s MC40 cyclotron, and international beam test facilities.
•Provide technical support for testing and readout to meet quality control requirements.
•Devise methods for constructing experimental apparatus and diagnose/solve faults in complex equipment, working with colleagues and occasional external suppliers.
•Assist in managing experimental and laboratory activities, including maintaining accurate records and ensuring compliance with relevant legislation and health & safety procedures.

Travel: Medium travel

Pay and Benefits

Salary: GBP 30,062 - 31,900 annually

Key Requirements

•Extensive relevant laboratory-based experience and familiarity with a wide range of laboratory equipment.
•In-depth practical knowledge of technical and scientific methods, including mechanical/electrical construction and electronics build/testing documentation.
•HNC or higher qualification in a technical subject involving mechanical, electrical, or electronic techniques.
•Experience meeting precise specifications to high standards and diagnosing/solving technical problems.
•Ability to travel within the UK and abroad to attend meetings and provide support at experimental testing facilities.
