Job Summary

Build and evolve OpenAI’s Consumer Products build and continuous integration systems to help engineers ship reliable on-device software faster. Own Bazel/yocto build and test workflows, maintain Starlark rules and hermetic toolchains, and improve CI performance across Buildkite pipelines. You’ll operate build infrastructure with Docker/OCI and Kubernetes runners, instrument CI with observability, and use AI to automate CI failure analysis and triage.

Key Responsibilities

•Own and evolve Bazel and yocto-based build and test workflows in a polyrepo environment.
•Design and maintain Starlark rules, macros, toolchains, and integrations for hermetic and reproducible builds.
•Improve CI performance and reliability across Buildkite pipelines, including queue/build time, cache hit rates, retries, and flake isolation.
•Build and operate CI/build infrastructure using Docker/OCI images, Kubernetes-based runners, cloud resources, and remote cache/execution systems.
•Instrument build and CI systems with metrics, logs, traces, dashboards, and analytics; partner with teams to debug failures and help remove bottlenecks, including participating in on-call for critical infrastructure.

Pay and Benefits

Salary: USD 293,000 - 325,000 annually

Key Requirements

•5+ years of engineering experience building infrastructure and tooling for developers.
•Hands-on experience with Bazel and/or similar build systems (e.g., Buck, Gradle) and knowledge of hermetic builds, dependency graphs, caching, sandboxing, and remote execution.
•Experience building CI systems at scale, where build time, queue time, flakiness, and developer trust impact engineering velocity.
•Comfort owning production software and working with strong SLA requirements.
•Ability to debug distributed build and CI failures across source control, containers, runners, remote caches, and test frameworks.
