Key Responsibilities

  • •Lead a team (3–8 engineers) designing, building, and maintaining high-performance systems for Modal’s Machines layer.
  • •Own the full lifecycle of a machine: accepting and benchmarking hardware, and managing network bring-up, kernel and image management, and hardware health tracking.
  • •Build and run distributed control-plane services that provision, monitor, and repair machines and hosts.
  • •Shape technical direction and drive architectural decisions across the team.
  • •Participate in on-call, responding to production incidents while staying hands-on across the stack.

Pay and Benefits

Salary: USD 270,000 - 330,000 annually

Key Requirements

  • •7+ years of experience writing high-quality production code.
  • •3+ years of direct people management experience leading engineers through planning, growth, and performance conversations.
  • •Experience operating large fleets of physical hardware at scale (bare metal provisioning, BMC/IPMI, PXE and network boot, firmware) or building control planes that manage them.
  • •Strong cloud skills.
  • •Strong low-level OS foundations (Linux kernel, drivers, networking, file systems, containers) and experience with hardware acceptance testing/benchmarking.
