Job Summary

Lead architecture for NPR’s most complex mobile and cross-platform initiatives, guiding end-to-end design from platform services to client applications and downstream data pipelines. Evaluate modern technologies, enforce technical governance through reviews and standards, and support operational resilience via deployments and on-call incident diagnosis, while mentoring engineering teams.

Key Responsibilities

•Define and implement shared architectural patterns and modular design systems across native iOS and Android, including cross-platform integrations.
•Lead platform-to-client architecture for personalized content delivery, supporting high-traffic localized media experiences across digital properties and member station networks.
•Conduct technical evaluations for custom builds vs. vendor solutions and establish architectural standards across divisions.
•Provide technical oversight across multi-team engineering initiatives, including architectural proposals and code reviews for security, workflows, and design quality.
•Support operational resilience through automated deployments (QA/UAT/production) and on-call incident diagnosis; author resilient, documented code and mentor engineering staff.

Key Requirements

•7+ years of progressive software engineering experience designing and leading technical architecture for complex, multi-team platform environments.
•Deep native mobile architecture expertise across iOS and Android using Swift, Kotlin, Java, or Objective-C.
•Proven ability designing high-traffic, resilient distributed systems and RESTful/GraphQL APIs with client-server integration patterns.
•Hands-on experience architecting media playback/streaming, CDN configurations, and cloud infrastructure (AWS or GCP).
•Experience integrating data privacy/compliance (GDPR, CPRA) and cloud cost optimization frameworks in high-availability environments.
