Job Summary

Own core Direct Debit and Recurring Payin capabilities that power automated payments across Wise. Design and build Java/Kotlin backend services, REST APIs, and event-driven architectures with Kafka, along with a payment orchestration layer that routes through payment service providers for cost and reliability. Optimize SQL/PostgreSQL schemas for high-volume transactional data, improve scalability and performance, and participate in testing, code reviews, and Tier 2 on-call.

•Design, develop, test, and maintain Java/Kotlin backend services using Spring Boot deployed on AWS.
•Build and maintain RESTful APIs serving customers across web and mobile platforms.
•Develop event-driven architectures with Apache Kafka and build a payment orchestration system routing payments across payment service providers.
•Design database schemas and optimize SQL queries for PostgreSQL handling high-volume transactional data.
•Participate in automated testing, code reviews, and on-call rotations to monitor and respond to production incidents.

Pay and Benefits

Salary: GBP 68,000 - 87,500 annually

Key Requirements

•Experience building backend services in Java or Kotlin with Spring Boot in production environments.
•Strong REST API design and delivery for web and mobile platforms at scale.
•Proficiency with SQL and PostgreSQL, including designing database schemas and optimizing queries for high-volume transactional data.

•Comfort with payment-domain engineering: payment orchestration, payment service providers, and writing automated unit/integration/end-to-end tests.
