Job Summary

Evaluate and size hybrid-electric propulsion architectures for a next-generation eVTOL, trading configurations from turbo-electric to series/parallel systems. Develop motor/generator and thermal management designs, generate performance/efficiency maps, and model battery charge/discharge and degradation to set limits and duty cycles. Build powertrain models for integration into Archer’s vehicle-level MDO stack and collaborate with vehicle and structures architects on packaging and integration.
Location: San Jose
Workplace: Hybrid
Employment Type: Full time
Job Function: Hardware, Embedded & Systems Engineering

Key Responsibilities

  • •Evaluate and trade hybrid-electric powertrain architectures (series, parallel, turbo-electric), integrating battery energy storage and electric motors/inverters with turboshaft-driven generator configurations considered.
  • •Size electric motors and generators from first principles and validate/refine designs with electromagnetic solvers as needed.
  • •Design the thermal management system architecture (heat exchangers, ducting, coolant routing) using thermal/CFD tools as needed.
  • •Generate performance/efficiency maps and model battery charge/discharge behavior (C-rates, thermal behavior, degradation) to inform sizing and duty-cycle decisions.
  • •Estimate thermal limits and duty cycles across motors, inverters, and batteries for representative mission profiles, and build powertrain models for integration into Archer’s vehicle-level MDO stack.

Pay and Benefits

Salary: USD 172,800 - 237,600 annually

Key Requirements

  • •Background in hybrid-electric, turbo-electric, or conventional turbine aircraft propulsion (aerospace or adjacent high-power industries).
  • •Some background in optimization, including multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO).
  • •Experience in at least two of: electromagnetic sizing of motors/generators; thermal management system sizing; battery modeling (equivalent-circuit or electrochemical).
  • •Proficiency with electromagnetic design tools such as ANSYS Maxwell, Motor-CAD, JMAG, or similar.
  • •Proficiency with thermal/CFD design tools such as ANSYS Icepak, Fluent, or similar.
