Job Summary

Own and evolve Visa’s Edge API Gateway and authentication layer, a critical path for every external API call. You’ll design and maintain Kong gateway components (including Lua plugins), authentication/authorization services, and Java/Spring Boot microservices, while ensuring secure, scalable, and high-quality operations. Lead code reviews and observability improvements using Datadog, create test plans, troubleshoot incidents on-call, and apply security-first patterns (OAuth2/OIDC, mTLS, audit logging).

Key Responsibilities

•Design, implement, and maintain Edge API gateway components including Kong (with Lua plugins), authentication/authorization services, and supporting Java/Spring Boot microservices.
•Translate functional requirements into system designs, communicate component interactions, and align delivery with business needs and timelines.
•Lead code reviews, enforce coding standards, mentor teammates on API gateway patterns, security, and Java.
•Own and improve observability (Datadog dashboards, monitors, and alerts) and use monitoring/analysis to identify patterns, test gaps, and defects.
•Respond to incidents during on-call rotations, troubleshoot complex issues, and build/iterate on guardrailed GenAI/agentic features on the Edge platform.

Key Requirements

•5+ years of relevant work experience (with a Bachelor’s Degree, an advanced degree, or 8+ years experience).
•Strong Java backend engineering skills (Java 17+, Spring Boot).
•Demonstrated API gateway experience (Kong, NGINX, Apigee, or similar) plus HTTP/REST, JWT, and OAuth2 fundamentals.
•Experience with Kubernetes and service mesh concepts (Istio/Envoy preferred).
•Security-conscious mindset for authentication/authorization, audit logging, and least-privilege.
