Key Responsibilities

  • •Advise product, engineering, and trust & safety teams on regulations and standards across content safety, consumer protection, intellectual property, privacy, and data security.
  • •Provide business-forward product counseling for web hosting, site creation, content publication, ecommerce, and social media offerings.
  • •Serve as subject matter expert on data protection and privacy laws (e.g., GDPR, CCPA), including consent frameworks and scalable compliance documentation processes.
  • •Track upcoming regulations and participate in global industry groups, representing Automattic’s interests before regulators and government agencies.
  • •Develop and scale legal processes and workflows to meet increasing regulatory and privacy requirements while supporting freedom of expression and user safety.

Pay and Benefits

Salary: USD 180,000 - 300,000 annually

Key Requirements

  • •JD from a US accredited law school with 5+ years of relevant experience (or an exception EU-based attorney).
  • •Familiarity with Automattic’s product industries and business models (e.g., open source, user-generated content, web hosting, social media, ecommerce, digital advertising) and their privacy/regulatory requirements.
  • •Ability to function independently in an asynchronous environment and willingness to stretch into new areas like litigation or IP if needed.
  • •Comfort working in ambiguous “grey areas” and providing clear recommendations even with imperfect information.
  • •Experience with data protection and privacy laws and consent frameworks for digital marketing and advertising.
