Key Responsibilities

  • •Set architectural direction for foundation model development spanning wearable sensor data, text, biomarkers, and behavioral signals.
  • •Identify which self-supervised and representation learning research bets are worth pursuing and drive them from thesis to production capability.
  • •Contribute to AI strategy and standards, including platform, compute, and infrastructure choices.
  • •Partner across research, product, and engineering to translate breakthroughs into product and business outcomes.
  • •Raise the technical bar by strengthening evaluation norms and supporting growth of staff and senior engineers; represent WHOOP externally.

Pay and Benefits

Salary: USD 270,000 - 300,000 annually

Key Requirements

  • •Advanced degree (Master’s or Ph.D.) or equivalent depth with extensive experience in large-scale machine learning and AI research.
  • •Track record of owning technical direction for a significant area and making architectural decisions with long-lasting impact.
  • •Ability to take ambiguous, high-risk research directions to production impact and to discontinue efforts that won’t succeed.
  • •Deep expertise in modern deep learning (transformers, state space models), multimodal training, self-supervised and representation learning, and RL-based post-training (PPO/DPO/GRPO).
  • •Experience with large-scale distributed training (data, model, and context parallelism) and demonstrated technical authority (publications and community impact).
