Key Responsibilities

  • •Provide early-stage guidance on thermal management architecture, including cooling inlet design, heat shield placement, exhaust routing, and surface coatings.
  • •Set up, run, and validate thermal and coupled thermal-fluid simulations, modeling convective, conductive, and radiative heat transfer for internal components and external surfaces.
  • •Drive iterative aerothermal optimization to minimize thermal drag penalty, reduce hotspot intensity, and maximize cooling efficiency using scripting and automated workflows.
  • •Design, plan, and execute aerothermal wind tunnel test campaigns, including instrumentation strategy, test plans, rig operation, and post-test correlation with simulation.
  • •Contribute to and lead in-flight thermal measurement campaigns, defining DAQ architecture, test matrices, analyzing flight data, and correlating with CFD predictions to sign off thermal margins.

Key Requirements

  • •B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field focused on fluid mechanics and heat transfer.
  • •Solid grounding in convective, conductive, and radiative heat transfer, boundary layer theory, and viscous flow physics for aircraft surfaces and internal cooling passages.
  • •Hands-on CFD simulation experience using at least one major solver (OpenFOAM, Star-CCM+, ANSYS Fluent/CFX, or equivalent), including thermal boundary conditions, turbulence models, and mesh strategies.
  • •Experience planning and executing thermal measurement campaigns in wind tunnel or in-flight settings, including instrumentation selection, DAQ setup, data reduction, and uncertainty analysis.
  • •Python proficiency to script data processing pipelines and automate post-processing of thermal simulation outputs, including interfacing with experimental DAQ systems.
