Job Summary

Senior water quality modelling role leading technically on river, lake, transitional and coastal waterbodies. You’ll guide junior staff, develop innovative modelling tools for water utilities and authorities, collaborate with hydrologists, engineers and MODellers, and contribute to bids and reporting. Projects span catchment-scale chemical investigations, WINEP/UPM studies, river restoration, nutrient modelling, and environmental permitting in a hybrid UK-based team.

Key Responsibilities

•Lead water quality assessments in rivers, lakes, and transitional/coastal waterbodies and develop tools to deliver efficiencies and innovative solutions for clients
•Conceptualise and scope modelling approaches with consideration of risks and opportunities for each study
•Build and check water quality models to support Integrated Water Management Plan projects, permitting studies, and EIAs
•Produce and review high-quality technical reports documenting model build and uncertainties
•Mentor staff, develop the team’s capabilities, and build relationships with clients and other technical disciplines

Key Requirements

•Expertise in water quality, including knowledge on compounds such as cryptosporidium, PFAS, geosmin and disinfection by products and effective treatment means
•Significant experience in fluvial and/or coastal water quality modelling software including demonstrable knowledge of Environment Agency requirements for UPM or WINEP studies, and experience of model build for such studies
•Experience completing mass balance calculations including simple, flow-weighted and Monte Carlo statistical approaches plus understanding of hydrological assessments and tools (e.g. REFH2, FEH)
•Practical knowledge of scripting programmes such as Python, Anaconda, R would be advantageous along with strong GIS skills (QGIS, ArcGIS and / or MapInfo)
•Masters degree (or equivalent) in hydrology, engineering, maths or other relevant discipline
