Key Responsibilities

  • •Support HCD and HFE studies and assessments using methods including interviews, focus groups, observation, contextual inquiry, card sorting, journey mapping, empathy mapping, personas, and usability testing.
  • •Plan, conduct, and analyze user research; synthesize insights into actionable recommendations and coordinate clinical subject matter expert and Veteran participation.
  • •Develop and maintain HCD artifacts such as journey maps, service blueprints, personas, empathy/affinity maps, user flow diagrams, process maps, information architecture diagrams, wireframes, and low-fidelity prototypes.
  • •Support heuristic evaluation, literature review, and capability assessments, including testing activities such as field testing, user acceptance testing, proofs of concept, and pilots.
  • •Support accessibility and compliance (Section 508/WCAG 2.2), applying the VA Design System and VA Content Style Guide, and produce research/status deliverables and presentations.

Pay and Benefits

Salary: USD 120,000 - 160,000 annually

Key Requirements

  • •Bachelor’s degree with 8+ years of work experience (or commensurate experience), with relevant backgrounds such as HCD/UX, human-computer interaction, human factors, psychology, design, anthropology, or health informatics.
  • •Foundational understanding of human-centered design and user experience principles in a professional, internship, apprenticeship, or research setting.
  • •Experience supporting qualitative research (e.g., interviews, focus groups, observation, usability testing), including note-taking, participant coordination, and synthesis.
  • •Ability to produce and maintain design research artifacts such as journey maps, personas, process maps, affinity maps, or wireframes.
  • •Working familiarity with accessibility requirements including Section 508 and WCAG 2.2, plus strong written and verbal communication to present research findings to technical and non-technical audiences.
