Job Summary

Build and maintain lab work-cell orchestration for automated wet-lab experimentation. You’ll develop instrument drivers and clean APIs across multiple communication protocols, schedule and execute multi-step protocols, and implement robust error recovery. Create monitoring and observability for instrument and run health, and debug issues across the software–hardware boundary while collaborating with lab automation engineers, software teammates, and scientists.
Location: Switzerland
Workplace: Onsite
Employment Type: Full time
Job Function: Software Engineering

Key Responsibilities

  • •Build orchestration software to coordinate liquid handlers, plate readers, incubators, and robot arms with correct timing, state, and error recovery.
  • •Reverse-engineer and develop instrument drivers and APIs, creating clean abstractions over device-specific protocols.
  • •Model and execute complex multi-step protocols reliably across multiple instruments.
  • •Implement error-recovery logic to retry, skip, alert, or pause depending on failure mode.
  • •Create monitoring and observability for work-cell health and debug software–hardware issues.

Key Requirements

  • •Write production code in Python and/or TypeScript that is well-structured and maintainable.
  • •Comfortable at the hardware–software boundary: drive physical devices, read protocol specs, debug connections, and reason about timing.
  • •Experience with lab automation tooling such as PyHamilton, PyLabRobot, or Opentrons is a strong plus.
  • •Reliability-minded approach for 24/7 lab runs, designing systems so one failing instrument doesn’t cascade.
  • •Maker/hacker mindset and independent judgment for defining what to build based on how the lab actually works.
