Job Summary

Underwrite residential mortgage loan applications using agency, investor, regulatory, and internal First Horizon guidelines. Evaluate borrower financial profiles, supporting documentation, and collateral valuation to make prudent credit decisions, manage risk and potential fraud, and ensure timely loan closings. Communicate approvals, conditions, clarifications, and denials with sales and operations partners, respond to audits and post-closing issues, manage an individual loan pipeline, and mentor less experienced underwriters.

Key Responsibilities

•Independently evaluate complex residential mortgage credit applications and supporting documentation to decide loans within designated authority levels using automated underwriting tools.
•Review and assess loan viability to identify risk issues and potential fraud.
•Ensure compliance with bank policies, procedures, regulatory requirements, and investor/internal underwriting guidelines.
•Communicate with sales and operations partners regarding approvals, conditions, clarifications, deficiencies, and denials.
•Manage an individual loan pipeline daily to meet closing dates and company turn-time standards; respond to audits and post-closing issues and mentor less experienced underwriters.

•Thorough understanding of mortgage lending regulations, underwriting guidelines, and the residential mortgage loan process, including bond, jumbo, and portfolio product types.
•Excellent verbal and written communication skills to clearly articulate the borrower’s financial profile and associated risks.
•Ability to prioritize work and meet tight timelines while managing a loan pipeline.
•Ability to partner and collaborate with peers and management.
•Government lending credentials, including FHA Direct Endorsement and VA SAR (or equivalent non-QM) with manual underwriting experience.
