Job Summary

Lead the PAC (Payments, Abuse & Conversion) team within DeepL’s Monetisation organization, owning end-to-end delivery of a self-serve customer journey from activation to paid conversion. Partner with Product and stakeholders to define the quarterly roadmap, drive measurable impact on self-serve ARR and fraud loss, and grow a distributed engineering team.

Key Responsibilities

•Lead, mentor, and grow a distributed engineering team through 1:1s, continuous feedback, performance reviews, and career development.
•Own the team’s delivery cadence and establish a predictable agile process; partner with Product to define and prioritise the quarterly roadmap.
•Provide technical guidance as a technical steward by reviewing system designs and guiding architecture for payments and fraud infrastructure.
•Make data-informed trade-offs across activation, retention, bot protection, rate limiting, and abuse detection to balance conversion and fraud prevention.
•Represent PAC in cross-functional planning by articulating technical trade-offs in commercial terms and building relationships with product, finance, and engineering stakeholders.

Key Requirements

•Proven direct people management experience leading engineering teams through growth, performance challenges, and organisational change.
•Significant hands-on experience as a Senior or Staff-level backend engineer with depth to guide architectural discussions.
•Strong payments domain experience building or managing payment gateway integrations, checkout flows, or billing infrastructure at production scale.
•Depth in fraud prevention, abuse detection, rate limiting, or bot protection to guide architectural decisions across a complex fraud stack.
•Experience designing, building, and operating scalable cloud-native distributed systems; experience with AWS, Docker, Kubernetes, and API design (gRPC, REST).
