Job Summary

Design and lead HVAC and heat rejection systems for data centers on AECOM’s Data Center and Mission Critical team in the East region. Select cooling systems, perform internal and external CFD analyses, and ensure redundancy and fault-tolerant operation. Own heat load calculations, capacity planning, energy efficiency and sustainability strategies, and air filtration/quality design, coordinating closely with electrical engineering for UPS, emergency power, and fire suppression integration.

Key Responsibilities

•Develop and design data center heat rejection and HVAC systems, including cooling requirements, airflow management, humidity control, redundancy, energy efficiency, and code/industry best practices.
•Select appropriate cooling systems (air/water side) such as fan wall units, CRAHs, chilled water, DX, CRAC units, in-row cooling, and containment solutions.
•Conduct internal and external CFD simulations to optimize airflow distribution, identify hotspots, evaluate transient periods, and recommend design modifications.
•Design for redundancy and fault tolerance to maintain continuous data center operation during equipment failure or maintenance.
•Perform heat load calculations and capacity planning for current and future growth, and coordinate HVAC design with electrical systems like UPS, emergency power, and fire suppression.

Travel: Low travel

Key Requirements

•Bachelor’s degree with 8+ years of relevant experience (or demonstrated equivalency).
•Experience in data center mechanical and electrical equipment installation and operation.
•P.E. registration required.
•Knowledge of data center standards including Uptime Institute TER Standard Topology, TIA 942, and ANSI/BICSI 002.
•Professional certifications related to HVAC engineering such as Certified Energy Manager (CEM), Building Energy Modeling Professional (BEMP), or LEED accreditation are advantageous.
