Job Summary

Lead Visa’s Asia Pacific legal support for the Japan market as a seasoned business/commercial lawyer. Advise business and technology teams on deal structures, commercial and contractual enhancements, and day-to-day matters, and draft, negotiate, and drive completion of complex commercial, technology, and strategic partnership agreements. Serve as an AP Legal stakeholder, coordinate support across Japan, Korea, and Mongolia, and advise on regulatory consultations related to payment regulations. Based in Tokyo with some work-related travel.

Key Responsibilities

•Provide counsel and advice to business and technology teams on deal structures and approaches to addressing issues, serving as a trusted strategic advisor.
•Review and advise on commercial and contractual enhancements and new business initiatives using risk-based judgment.
•Draft, negotiate, and drive to completion complex commercial, technology, and strategic partnership agreements.
•Represent AP Legal and liaise with global and regional Visa legal teams, coordinating support across Japan, Korea, and Mongolia.
•Advise on regulatory consultations and government engagements related to payment regulations; perform other assigned responsibilities by Chief Counsel for Asia Pacific.

Travel: Low travel

Key Requirements

•12 to 15 years of post-qualification legal experience; qualified to practice law in Japan or a common law jurisdiction.
•Solid corporate/commercial experience drafting and negotiating strategic, complex cross-border deals in a top-tier law firm or multinational company.
•Excellent command of written and spoken English and Japanese; able to work in Tokyo, Japan.
•Strong legal analytical skills integrating legal advice with business knowledge to provide balanced risk/benefit guidance.
•Ability to independently manage and drive complex cross-border commercial and technology transactions while juggling multiple priorities under tight deadlines.
