Job Summary

Underwrite individual Excess & Surplus/Specialty casualty risks for acceptability, pricing, coverage, terms, and conditions, using deep technical analysis and authority for complex accounts. Manage broker relationships to achieve production and loss ratio goals, review claims and loss history, and place appropriate reinsurance. Develop and present new classes of business, including forms and market viability research, while coaching and mentoring underwriting talent.

Key Responsibilities

•Research and develop new classes of business by assessing market viability, competition, and trends; create forms and endorsements and develop rates with actuarial support.
•Review individual risks for acceptability, pricing, coverage, terms and conditions; set premium charges, endorsements/exclusions, and place reinsurance as needed within guidelines.
•Achieve production and loss ratio goals with assigned brokers through broker management, ongoing analysis of premium/loss results, and corrective action recommendations.
•Handle policy maintenance and mid-term requests by reviewing endorsement requests, loss control recommendations, and claim activity to take appropriate action.
•Foster broker and reinsurer relationships; teach and mentor underwriting talent and assist the manager with department strategies and employee coaching.

Salary: USD 104,000 - 194,000 annually

Key Requirements

•Eight years of casualty (CL) underwriting experience handling large or complex accounts, with excess & surplus lines experience preferred.
•Knowledge of complex casualty underwriting policies and practices, insurance law, and underwriting/marketing principles and techniques.
•Ability to analyze exposures to loss and determine appropriate premium charges, endorsements, exclusions, and manuscript wording for insurance contracts.
•Knowledge of Standard Bureau Rating plans, catastrophe management concepts, alternative rating methods, and pricing theory.
•Completion of general insurance courses such as CPCU, CIC, AU, ARM, CPIW, CWIS, or ASLI is preferred.
