Job Summary

Serve on WSP’s POWER Testing and Energization team as a field technician performing protection and control testing and commissioning on high-voltage utility substations. Execute relay testing with equipment such as Omicron and Doble relay test sets, apply IEEE/NETA/NFPA/NESC standards, document work using mobile tools and field forms, and support project leadership while ensuring safety, compliance, and accurate data across active job sites.

Key Responsibilities

•Perform testing and commissioning for protection and control systems on high-voltage substations, following client and industry standards and manufacturer recommendations.
•Conduct hands-on protective relay testing using relay test sets (e.g., Omicron and Doble) and test specific relay models/schemes as assigned.
•Use field forms, digital tools, and mobile applications to document site activities and maintain accurate logs, photo documentation, and labels.
•Support project leadership (Project Lead/Field Supervisor) by resolving field challenges, escalating complex technical problems, and providing informal guidance to junior technicians as needed.
•Participate in daily safety briefings, comply with health/safety protocols and regulatory requirements, and complete related administrative tasks (timecards, expense reports, project reports).

Key Requirements

•High school diploma or equivalent.
•Minimum 7 years of experience in the electrical testing industry, including medium/high voltage circuit breakers, power transformers, instrument transformers, and substation protection and controls testing.
•Expertise in transmission, generation, and distribution relays (e.g., SEL, Basler, Beckwith, GE) and protective schemes, including relay calibration and control scheme testing.
•Experience with electrical field testing standards and procedures such as NETA, IEEE, and NFPA applicable standards.
•Ability to travel up to 80% and perform physically demanding outdoor work; must have a valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
