Job Summary

Underwrite complex Excess & Surplus/Specialty (E&S/S) brokerage casualty risks with the authority to set acceptability, pricing, coverage, and terms. Manage production and loss-ratio goals with assigned brokers by analyzing premium/loss and claim activity, handling endorsements and mid-term requests, and placing reinsurance when needed. Develop new classes of business, resolve technical questions, and mentor and coach underwriters while partnering with Actuarial, Finance, and Claims teams.

•Develop and research new classes of business by assessing market trends/viability and creating forms, endorsements, and rates with actuarial support.
•Review individual risks and determine acceptance/decline, premium charge, and appropriate endorsements/exclusions; place reinsurance as directed.
•Achieve production and loss ratio goals through broker management, continually analyzing premium and loss results and assessing broker submission quality.
•Oversee policy maintenance and mid-term requests, including endorsement authorizations, loss control compliance follow-ups, and appropriate action on claim activity.
•Foster broker relationships, resolve technical questions of highest complexity, and proactively develop knowledge by teaching and mentoring underwriting talent.

Key Requirements

•8 years of casualty (CL) underwriting experience handling large or complex accounts; excess & surplus lines experience is preferred.
•Underwriting expertise for complex CL policies, practices, procedures, and insurance law, including Standard Bureau Rating concepts like catastrophe management.
•Knowledge of treaty and facultative reinsurance, regulatory issues, wholesale broker system, market conditions, and company operations.
•Ability to analyze and evaluate highly complex insurance risks (policy language, commercial/alternative rating plans, pricing methodologies) and make sound acceptability decisions.
•Completion of general insurance courses such as CPCU, CIC, AU, ARM, CPIW, CWIS, or ASLI is preferred.
