Job Summary

Join ByteDance’s Pico AR/VR display optics system team to develop optical design and simulation software and build optical system prototypes (bench-top and head-mounted). Partner with internal technology teams and external industry partners to advance optical technologies, and communicate progress across collaboration teams. This PhD internship offers hands-on research and product impact within a VR/AR R&D environment, reviewed on a rolling basis.

Key Responsibilities

•Develop optical design and simulation software for AR/VR display optics systems.
•Develop optical system prototypes (bench-top and head-mounted) to support design and manufacturing decisions.
•Collaborate with internal technology teams and external industry partners to develop advanced optical technologies.
•Communicate design and development progress across collaboration teams.

Key Requirements

•Be a Ph.D. student or postdoc in Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related technical discipline (or equivalent experience).
•Have knowledge and experience in at least one area such as imaging optics design, ray-tracking algorithms, electromagnetic simulation, stray light analysis, image quality evaluation, polarization, visual optics, or optical testing and metrology.
•Have programming knowledge/experience in languages such as Python and C++.
•Demonstrate strong learning and communication skills.
•Have prior internship experience in AR/VR, optics, or consumer electronics (preferred).
