Key Responsibilities

  • •Help build and run automated liquid-handling protocols on robots (Hamilton STAR and others), controlled in Python with guidance.
  • •Support work-cell operations and maintenance, including loading runs, swapping consumables, calibrating instruments, and troubleshooting jams/misreads.
  • •Write real Python software for instrument drivers, integrations, and tooling that controls hardware and moves data through LabOS.
  • •Reverse-engineer how instruments communicate by capturing traffic (e.g., with Wireshark or USB/serial sniffers) and translating it into control code.
  • •Run tests on new protocols and instruments, record results, flag anomalies, and document protocols and fixes for reproducibility.

Key Requirements

  • •Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a Bachelor's or Master's in engineering, robotics, mechatronics, computer science, bioengineering, or a related field.
  • •A generalist maker who likes building, taking things apart, and troubleshooting across software, electronics, and mechanics.
  • •Self-starter who identifies what needs doing and acts without waiting for instructions.
  • •Solid software skills with real Python experience, including structuring code, working with APIs, using Git, and debugging.
  • •Bonus maker/hacker experience such as 3D printing/CAD, electronics/machining, microcontrollers, robotics, lab automation, or contributing to open-source projects like PyLabRobot or PyHamilton.
