Job Summary

Conduct lab and field tests on aggregate and hot mix asphalt to ensure materials meet required specifications. Monitor pavement temperature, thickness, density, and overall condition during installation, and assist with mix adjustments. Calibrate and use a density meter, enter test results into computer systems, and communicate findings with other technicians and paving personnel. Work independently with limited supervision and follow safety and company ethics policies.

Key Responsibilities

•Test aggregate and/or asphalt mix to determine composition and consistency with required specifications.
•Assist in adjusting mix composition to keep asphalt mix within specifications.
•Monitor quality of hot mix asphalt and pavement conditions during installation (temperature, thickness, density).
•Test materials for requirements such as weight, gravity, temperature, thickness, and gradation.
•Input test result data into computers and communicate test results with other technicians and paving personnel.

Key Requirements

•High School diploma or equal skill level.
•Ability to perform standardized laboratory tests in accordance with ASTM and AASHTO standards and understand basic asphalt plant operating procedures.
•Knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations related to safety, the environment, and transportation; ability to detect hazards and malfunctions.
•Ability to obtain Level 2 and/or 3 ODOT Testing Certifications within a reasonable amount of time.
•Ability to read English sufficiently to understand specifications, reports, manuals, and regulations.
